🧑‍💻POV: You’ve realized your content isn’t quite as helpful or fresh as it can be.😱 Now what?

Off to do some keyword research!

What are keywords and why are they important?

Keywords and keyword research are fundamental aspects of SEO because they help you to understand the terms and phrases that your target audience uses when searching for products, services, or information online.

The insights that keyword research provides into the search queries that potential customers are using, allow you to “stack the deck” in your favor. You can tailor your content to their needs.

Where to start:

Start with a keyword planner tool -(SEMrush offers a free version with limited functionality but it’s useful for basic keyword research and understanding search trends).

Armed with this information, you’ll want to pick out where you can add those keywords to your content (i.e. Add your city and state to the services you offer with “Residential Services in Omaha, NE” or “Countertops and Floors in Erie, PA”)

Adding relevant keywords allows search engines to understand who you are and what you offer which, in turn, allows them to deliver your site to those using those keywords to look for you.

How often should you refresh your content?

While Google won’t tell us how often they would prefer to see new content, there are a few guidelines to follow:

  • Regular blog posts - keep blog posting to regular intervals. Monthly blog posts are a great way to keep new content feeding the search engines.
  • Evergreen content - these are informational articles or how-tos that are designed to be timeless but it’s a good idea to review and update every 6-12 months.
  • Product Pages - update when there is a change to any product detail (new packaging, pricing, availability, etc.).

It’s a good idea to use analytics to determine which pages aren’t performing well, then update or refresh any content that isn’t meeting performance goals.

Keep in mind:

Refreshing content doesn’t mean starting from scratch. Use what you have and find creative ways to add keywords. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing! It’s okay to update a single page at a time. Be sure to utilize data analytics to determine where to start. Create a priority list and knock it out when you have the capacity.
